It is well said “ Make hay while the sun shines ”. Hay has played important part in the growth and expanse of rural life. It is the main fodder for the cattle as well we can spot houses with hay thatched roofs in the rural areas. The hay is soft and fluffy. It is the dried form of long grass. It can even be used for art purposes. By using it in art work we can depict its various uses. This will acquaint our children with the materials used in rural areas to build houses and other usage will also be clear in their mind. What if someday someone goes out to trek, it will be better if they know how to manage from the least supplies. Making your children aware of the usage of hay is one such step.

Easy Hay Art Design

Let us make the easiest hay art design first. Take a drawing sheet and make a home scenery, a house with thatched roof and a river flowing by. Make some cows and leave a patch for the hay for the cows. Now start colouring the scenery with crayons. Use glue to paste the hay on the roof of the house and at the patch left in front of the cows. Art Activity For Kids with Dry Grass, Dry Leaves & Broomstick

Make a drawing with a cow and some grass in front of it. Now colour the background and the cow leaving the grass area empty. You may use crayons to colour the drawing. Now use glue and spread it in the space for the grass. Now paste the grass slowly and with a steady hand. Cut the excess of grass, which is protruding out of the sheet or out of the boundaries of the grass drawn before. For better understanding or to take some idea look up:

How To Make Hut Using Dry Grass and Card Paper

Now let us make a three dimensional hut out of dry grass and cardboard and drawing sheet. First of all cut a rectangular sheet according to the size of your hut’s bottom cylindrical portion. We are using a yellow sheet you may use any neutral coloured sheet. Now mark the edges on the sides and in the horizontal direction mark a few adjacent lines at particular widths. Cut the dry grass in small pieces. It becomes easier to paste smaller pieces. Once all the grass is cut we start by pasting it on the sheet, going in the each width section. Apply enough glue before every application and you may even overlap the layers. Leave the gap for the window and the door. Now cut the door and the window and remove that piece of the sheet. Now join the two ends, using the left out edge which we had marked earlier. Now cut two circular portions either from yellow or white sheet. These two circular parts should be of the size of the already made base using the dry grass. Now fit these two portions inside the cylindrical portion. Now cut a big circle and cut it at a radius. Now fold it according to the size of the cylinder and secure it with glue. Now make different curves on the cone at different widths. Now start pasting the already cut dry grass to the cone. Let it go out of boundaries if it is going. To secure the cone on top of the cylinder apply glue on the top edge of the cylinder and press the cone for some time. For better understanding look up:

Cool DIY Bottle Art

Now we are going to make a DIY show piece. It is a two in one DIY as it recycles the old plastic bottle. First of all cut a plastic bottle from the top. Now place some dry grass or hay at the bottom side, while we cut another bottom. You can stick some stickers on the outside of the bottle it will make it look colourful and bright. Now the bottle has bottoms on both the ends. For better understanding look up:

How To Make Grass Coiled Basket

Let us make a basket using the dry grass. First of all collect some long dry grass. Wrap these grass strands with the help of a tree bark. Moisten the bark before wrapping. We start with the wrapping then the looping and then we sew simultaneously. Each step is followed by the other in sequence. We are using a bone needle to sew. You may use a finer needle to work your way. Continue with the looping, wrapping and sewing. Add more straw when the previous bundle feels to be getting finished. Join it with the previous bundle in continuation. When you need to add more bark to sew that is a bit complicated. When only a small bast is left give it a few stitches and then take up the new bark and double the last stitch and your new stitching bark is ready to go.
