DIY: How to make Newspaper Jhula for Bal Gopal – Janmashtami Special

Janmashtami is a very important festival for all the Indians. We all come together and celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. It marks the day when Lord Krishna came to Earth as a human incarnation. Krishna was a very naughty child. His mother Yashoda used to seeing him in his jhoola and he was very fond of makhan, white butter. Now we as the devotees of Krishna celebrate him every year and make jhoolas for him as he is a new born baby. Our love for Lord Krishna is immense. Let us make this beautiful jhula for Lord Krishna and celebrate Janmashtami in full fervour.

How to Make Krishna Jhula at Home | Step by Step

Best out of waste! This golden Krishna Jhula design is looking great. Use old newspaper to make Krishna Janmashtami jhula design. Use stones and pearls to decorate it.

Procedure- Making the Pillars

Start by making the pillars of the jhoola. The foundation of every structure must be strong and these pillars will become the foundation of this Jhoola. You will need lots of newspaper for this beautiful jhoola. Collect some old newspapers. Now make 10 newspaper rolls with one rectangular piece each. This will look like the image shown above. Stick the ends of the newspaper rods to the rod base. This will secure the newspaper in place.

Now combine the nine newspaper rods and stick them together using lots of school glue. This will result in a single solid mass of newspaper rods joined together. This forms the inside of your jhoola pillars.

Use the tenth newspaper rod to cover the bundle of newspaper rods. Stick it at one and and then go on rolling it around the bundle of other newspaper rods. This makes the newspaper rods bundle more sturdy and strong. You can use glue at every round of the newspaper rod. You will get an all covered newspaper rod in the end of this.

When one of the rods gets finished in between, stick the end tightly and start a new rod from the same point. You can even cut one section off to make the smaller parts of the jhoola. This will give you different length sections of the pillar you are intending to make. You can plan the length of the sections according to the size of the jhoola.

Cut of the sections at the required length. This is a very critical step. If one piece is shorter than the other, the jhoola will not remain stable at all. This unbalancing will not look good at all. So pay attention to the craft dimensions while cutting the sections off.

Now you have different sized sections for the jhoola. Let these pieces dry completely to make them hard and sturdy. This will ensure that the newspaper does not come off the pillars at all.

Now make some more newspaper rods. Seal the ends of the newspaper rods with glue. Start rolling the newspaper rod from one end of the rod, inwards. You will get a tight coil. Keep on applying some glue time to time to ensure that the coil does not reopen.

Now seal the ends of this coil with the help of school craft glue. This will ensure that the coil remains tight and coiled for long. Let it dry.

Make more of such tight newspaper rod coils. You will need six large sized newspaper rod coils and two medium sized newspaper rod coils. Let them dry after coiling and application if glue.

For the details we will need some tiny decorative pieces. To make these, use some thin strips of newspaper and quill them into tight coils using a Quilling needle. This is really easy to do.

Add glue to the open ends of these tiny quilled tight coils. Glue these small coils together in groups of three. Let them dry.

Now you have some beautiful three tiny coil groups. These groups look like flowers after drying. Keep them aside.

Let us now put everything in place for the main structure of the jhoola. Now stick a large sized newspaper rod coil at the base and a small pillar section on top of it. Add the tiny coiled groups at the base to provide a strong and sturdy foundation to the pillar structure.

To make the top rod, take the largest pillar structure and add two large sized newspaper rod coils at the two ends of the pillar rod. Seal the edges with craft glue.

Make a replica of the base pillar. Now add one newspaper rod coil on top of the pillar rod added to the main pillar. This will be a bit difficult to balance and stick but keep patience to completely join the coil to the rod. Now let it dry.

Once the coil stuck on the top of the pillar has dried, add one more small pillar section on top of it. Stick it gently using the school craft glue. Now let it dry.

When all the pieces have been stuck and have dried, join the two base pillars with the top rod for the jhoola frame to be ready. Use glue at every end to stick everything in place. Let the joints dry.

Now you have the final frame for the jhula. Keep it aside. Now we will be moving towards making the jhula, it is the most important thing for this craft.

Procedure- Making the Jhula

Let us now build the jhula for the craft. To make this Jhula you will need a pair of scissors, stapler, needle and thread, some golden thread, cardboard pieces, crafty glue, newspaper rods. Now you are all set to make the jhula.

Take the two cardboard pieces and cut them to size. Thread the corners of one cardboard piece. Stick the golden thread to the other cardboard piece and stick to the first cardboard piece. The golden thread will be used to pull the jhoola and swing it.

Now take some newspaper rods. Cut these newspaper to size of the cardboard pieces. Now we will stick these sized portions on the cardboard piece. Let it dry.

Now we have a beautiful newspaper rods patterned jhoola base.

Also make the back for the jhoola design. Attach the back of the jhoola with the help of crafty glue. Use newspaper rods along with it.

Also make the sides of the jhoola with the help of newspaper rods. Now you have a complete jhoola with the sides, back and the base of the jhoola.

Get some metallic gold paint. Paint the complete jhoola with this metallic gold paint. Do not paint the threads. Let the paint dry before moving further.

When the paint has dried, take some small sized beads and thread the beads through the thin threads on the four corners of the jhoola.

Join the four beaded strings together at the top. It will look pretty and add more sheen to the jhoola craft.

Use a hot glue gun to stick the small beads to the front empty places. Also stick the beads to the top of the back of the jhoola. This looks pretty.

You have a beautiful jhoola design with you now. Use a hook style clasp to help in hanging the jhoola from the beaded strings. This will be used to hang the jhoola from the main frame.

Procedure- Golden Coloring & Decoration

Now take the main frame of the jhoola craft. Use a golden spray can or the metallic golden paint the same as the previously used one to paint the main frame of the jhoola craft. Let it dry for some hours.

You can add a Krishna and Radha photograph at the top of the main frame of the jhoola craft. You can get these images from magazines or get some images printed on your own. Decorate the outer edges of the image with golden lace.

Now clasp the jhoola below the main frame structure. Now you get the combined jhoola and frame together.

Use bindis or sequins to decorate the main frame and the jhoola. You can use ribbons, sequins, gems or even small trinkets to decorate the frame.

Your beautiful little krishna jhula is ready. Now you can have a happy Janamashtmi with your Lord Krishna. You can pull the golden string to pull the jhoola.
