Makar Sankranti / Pongal is an important festival of the Hindus.
What?: For those who are new to this festival, It’s a harvest festival for Hindus and is quite popular in the states of Maharashtra (Bornahan), Karnataka, Andhra & Tamilnadu mid January. This is the day when the Sun transitions from winter to Spring. In Northern India too, Lohri is celebrated with great Pomp. The day before Sankranti is called Bhogi and this is when people discard old stuff and habits and concentrate on new things causing change or transformation. Now isn’t that a fab way to start the year?
Sankranti 2020: Sankranti falls on 14th January, 2020.
Why?: On Makar Sankranti, the sun enters the sun-sign of Capricorn or Makara (the Indian rashi). Therefore the ‘Makar’ in the name. The word ‘Sankranti’ signifies the movement of the sun from one zodiac sign to another. Thus, the name of the festival literally means the movement of the sun into Capricorn.

Making a rangoli pattern is a staple tradition of Makar Sankranti. You can make this beautiful rangoli depictibg all the aspects and elements of Makar Sankranti. Start by making an outer design for the mat, kite, kalash, laddoo, sindoor, thread roll, using a chalk piece. Now start filling the outer boundaries of the rangoli design with the help of rangoli powder. You can stick the colors to the base with the help of glue to make it secure. Now start filling in the outer boundaries with the rangoli color. You can add patterns and designs in the mat and the kite to make them look more pretty. Fill in the mango leaves of the kalash to make it look realistic. This rangoli design can be finished off with a beautifully designed lit diya on the side. This will add more beauty and meaning to this Makar Sankranti rangoli design.

Now take some popsicle sticks and paint them in yellow color. Form a platform for the cart and fix it inside the wheels. Fix the bullocks in front of the platform of the cart. Now take some flexible bamboo sticks and curve them onto the base platform. Stick three such bent bamboo sticks. Stick some popsicle sticks painted in yellow on to of the cart. You cart is ready to be pulled. Now you can add a jute rops sitting chair and some instrument based teracotta toys. This gives an authentic account of the Makar Sankranti celebrations in rustic setting.

This is a beautiful God depicting Makar Sankranti craft. To start with first of all take a large sized white sheet. Now fold it in half. Paint the upper portion in Godlike bright orange hues. Make dark colored circles in the lower white portion of the sheet. Now use an extra sheet to draw and paint the God figure. Now cut out the figure of God and paste it as if standing on the orange sheet. Now cut out seven horses from a white colored sheet as if they are pulling a chariot. Now paste them in the same manner as the figure of the God in front of the Figure of God. Draw the shadow of the horses in the white sheet. Draw the details in the horses using a black sharpie pen. Now when you see from the front you will have a beautiful view of the horses pulling the God’s chariot.

Makar Sankranti is an auspicious festival for all of us. We all look forward to the fun and frolic Makar Sankranti offers to us. This year let us make it more fun with such beautiful kite crafts. First of all buy a kite from the market. If you have bought a plain kite you will have to use chalk or 3D glitter tube to make the designs. If you have a patterned kite, start by enhancing the colors of the kite using some paints. Once the paint has dried, take some glue and 3D glitter. Also take some small sized beads for the craft. Stick the beads alongside the beautiful patterns and designs. Add 3D glitter patterns and designs on and around the different paint patterns made before. You can even use glitter on the sticks of the kite. Add some pom poms on the prime designs to beautify it further. This surely looks pretty.

If you are going to offer a saree, open upto four folds of the saree, now make a triangular fold at the top edge of the saree, and let the beautiful borders of the saree show at the bottom. After folding up the saree, take some bangles and align them along the top triangle of the saree. Spread some yellow colored rangoli powder around the bangles. Add some more rangoli designs to the outer lining. Add some beautiful flowers to each of the bangles. Now keep all the material required for the pooja on the saree. The material must be meticulously kept in bowls and boxes. This looks pretty good.
